Salvador Tellez-Giron, 66, who hung himself at his condo on Madison's Southwest Side after killing his 33-year-old wife, Viviana, Saturday, was living apart from her at the time of the incident.
Madison police have no record of previous domestic violence calls at the address, Madison Police spokesman Joel DeSpain said Monday.
Police refused to say whether there was a suicide note. The couple's 6-year-old son, whose name was not released, was not at the home when the deaths occurred, police confirmed.
Family members found the couple Saturday evening at Salvador Tellez-Giron's condo at 747 Kottke Drive. Viviana Tellez-Giron was living in Fitchburg. After autopsies Sunday, the Dane County Coroner said Viviana Tellez-Giron died from multiple blunt force injuries and Salvador Tellez-Giron from self-inflicted hanging.
Salvador Tellez-Giron, a Latino community leader and a founding member of the Latino Chamber of Commerce of Dane County, also had three grown children with his former wife, Yolanda Salazar Torres, from whom he was divorced on March 7, 2001, after 38 years of marriage.
The family, including Salazar Torres and their three grown children, Patricia, Teresa and Guillermo, was named Wisconsin's Hispanic Family of the Year in 2005 by United Migrant Opportunity Services Inc. for their social services work in Madison.
Dr. Patricia Tellez-Giron practices at the Wingra Family Medical Center. Teresa Tellez-Giron is a social worker with the Dane County Department of Human Services.
The 6-year-old boy was born March 25, 2002, to Viviana Murrieta Reyes and Salvador Tellez-Giron. The couple obtained a marriage license later in 2002. Viviana's family is from Veracruz, Mexico.
Salvador Tellez-Giron and his first wife had been lawyers in Mexico before following their adult children to Madison. He operated an auto body shop on Packers Avenue.
Peter Munoz, executive director of Centro Hispano, said the family had been a positive influence on the entire community. "This came like an awful shock to find this tragedy," Munoz said. "The family has been devastated by this."
Funeral services for Salvador Tellez-Giron are set for Wednesday at Bethel Lutheran Church, 312 Wisconsin Ave. Visitation is at 11 a.m. Mass will be celebrated by Pastor Pedro Suárez at 11:30 a.m.
Shiva Bidar-Sielaff, a spokeswoman for the family, on Monday thanked people for their prayers. "They (the family) recognize the enormous loss suffered by Viviana's family and friends and are committed to providing her family with any needed support to carry out her family's wishes for a fitting burial," she said.
Marlys Howe, manager of the domestic violence unit for the Dane County District Attorney, said it is not unusual for domestic violence to accelerate without previous police involvement. "You never know," Howe said. "There might have been numerous (prior) instances but no system involvement. Sometimes you find out about stuff after the fact."
