The University of Wisconsin football team's dramatic tumble out of The Associated Press Top 25 poll the last two weeks might seem startling, if the same thing didn't happen last year.

It is becoming downright predictable for the Badgers, who have a habit of disappointing when preseason expectations are the highest.

Despite playing relatively well in the 20-17 loss to Ohio State on Saturday night, the Badgers (3-2 overall, 0-2 Big Ten Conference) dropped out of the latest AP poll released Sunday following a second straight loss. They hung in at No. 24 in the coaches' poll and the Harris poll.

UW was ninth in the AP poll and eighth in the coaches' poll two weeks ago. It's the second straight year it has gone from the top 10 to out of the media poll in two weeks.

The Badgers started No. 7 in the media poll last year and were No. 5 on Sept. 30. After losing back-to-back Big Ten games to Illinois and Penn State, leaving them 5-2 and 2-2, they dropped out of the poll in two weeks.

That continues a recent trend of the Badgers repeatedly failing to deliver when expectations are the highest.

This was the fifth time since 1990 they were ranked in the preseason top 15, opening at No. 13. The only time they stayed there at the end of the season was in 1999, starting 10th and finishing fourth.

Conversely, they have finished in the top 15 in the final poll five times in that span; in three of them, they came into the season unranked.

While preseason polls are notoriously unreliable, they do speak to the expectation level.

After four straight January bowl games, 40 wins over the last four seasons and 17 starters back, this UW team expected to compete for a Big Ten title.

After two conference games, that goal is largely out of reach.

And it doesn't get any easier this week with No. 6 Penn State (6-0, 2-0) coming to Camp Randall Stadium for another Saturday night game.
But UW coach Bret Bielema's message to the players Sunday night was that most of the team goals are still obtainable.

"We've got a lot to play for still," senior guard Andy Kemp said. "Coach B made that clear. We've got to take it as a learning step, learn from the film and move on for Penn State."

A year ago, some of the players thought the team's high early ranking made for some complacency — that team was handed a high ranking, coming off a 12-1 season in 2006.

That was one of the many lessons this team hoped to learn from last season. But it finds itself in virtually the same spot again.

Last year's team battled injury problems after the two straight losses and still climbed back to as high as No. 18 in the AP poll before finishing No. 24.

This team finally has tight end Travis Beckum (hamstring) at 100 percent and could get tight end Garrett Graham (foot) back this week. But left tackle Gabe Carimi likely is out with what looked like a serious injury suffered to his right knee in the second quarter.

It has been an especially difficult two games for the 12 senior starters. "It's tough, not only for myself, but all the guys," senior linebacker Jonathan Casillas said. "It's my last year. I didn't want to lose two games. Who does?

IlliterateSEC says:
This is something that dates back to that unfortunate 2006-07 season, where UW actually had a pretty good team and only had one stumble, once again, at Michigan. If that team would have been ranked in the top 25, a BCS game may have come to them. That off-season, BB had a cow and then spoke out about how Notre Dame is always ranked and how they weren't rewarded in the polls by spanking Auburn the year before, etc. The thing is, those kind of seasons you just have to swallow. I would rather UW be underrated going into a season, and then overachieve resulting in all the pundits arguing about how good they actually were. This team should have never been ranked in the top 10. Way too thin on defense with a very suspect secondary. The quarterback? Tough to figure out that one. I think most people thought Evridge would be adequate. But this trend of crash landing down from the top 10 and then find out the talent just isn't there is too deflating. I also don't accept the thinking that preseason rankings affect recruiting. UW will never attract the athletes that Mich, Ohio St and the SEC teams draw. The first two schools have too much history on their side, and why not go to an SEC team where going to classes is optional and illiteracy is expected from the student athlete....Vanderbilt excluded.

Brad Childress??? says:
WOW Brad Childress, are you insane? he would be TERRIBLE. Our Offensive Coordinator right now is one of the best in the nation, he will be recieving a head coaching job soon and we will lose him. Look at what he has done with the passing game the last few years, what do you want to go back to that White character when Alvarez was here? That is a joke, Childress's Vikings team was a favorite by a lot of people to be in the Super bowl because of talent, the ONLY reason the Vikings are 2-3 is because of how terrible Childress is as a coach.

Bielema's team is young, they are playing the wrong QB, but holy smokes does he know how to recruit, Barry players are now leaving the program and you wait when these guys like Jonathan Clay, Curt Phillips, Josh Olgesby, Kyle Jefferson, David Gilreath, Maurice Moore, etc, guys that Barry COULD NOT recruit start to get more experienced, wow. This team was not ready to be a national contender yet, you wait though, two years from now when it is Bielema's team, thats when we will be good.

BigTen Fan says:
I wonder if Barry "it's all about me" Alvarez hired(gave) the head coach position to BB (Big Baby) a few years too early? He did a good job at Iowa as a graduate assistant and he did an excellent job at K-State. I wonder if Barry "it's all about me" pulled the trigger too early? Maybe a few more years of "grooming" his handpicked choice would have helped? Is it just a coincidence that the Badgers start out the season ranked very high and then crash land at the end of the season. Maybe BB (Big Baby)and his ever changing crew of coaches have something to do with that??I agree that I would like to see the Badgers play the "big boys" in the preseason games. However, if they do play big time team (Fla. USC, LSU) fans had better be ready for the poll results of losing very early in the season. With this coaching staff, odds are that they would lose most of these early "warm up" games!!Tick Tock, BB Tick Tock!!

It's not that we didn't give Coach B a chance... if you remember how badly Badgers tumbled last season, and how badly they are coached against ranked and unranked teams, home games or away games...
Coach B is definitely a B-graded type of coach. If he sticks around, I can foresee Badgers roll down to the bottom of the Big10 rank in a few more games. It's also a big waste of the talents they recruited. Eventually, they can't get good players any more...
I'll probably turn off my TV on Saturday... and never even think about buying any Badger football ticket, until Barry finds a A-graded coach.

FanWithABrain says:
Kill the Coach...Kill the Coach. Barry gave him the keys to the car and he is running it into the ground. Which is clearly true, BB's .774 winning percentage shows that. BTW, Barry's winning percentage over his last 3 seasons was .684 And before any of you point to the schedule keep in mind that the schedule was compiled before BB even got on campus.

If you want to look at where Wisconsin's problems lie right now, take a look at the number of wide receivers Barry recruited in his last 2 years as coach. These players would be seniors or redshirt seniors. Go to rivals and look and the quality of athlete BB is getting compared to what Barry got. Those players are young and learning. Have there been coaching mistakes, YES, but to kill the staff for losing 2 games in moronic. I remember Barry losing to Cincy with Ron Dayne, and he had his fair share of half effort games against Northwestern.

Lifelong fan and Alum says:
I've rarely missed any games in the last 10 years, but I wish I had stayed home on Saturday. Throughout the season I have noticed how the Badger bench stands around talking instead of watching the game. During "Jump Around" the Ohio State team was actually jumping around, while the Badgers just stood there. The Ohio sideline, as I have been told, was actually shown jumping on TV. Team spirit and enthusiasm are like trickle down economics. If the top isn't excited, how can anyone else be?

noname says:
I think there is a serious problem with team prepration. these players are not being properly coached. Granted they don't have the most talent in the big ten,but good coaching offsets some of the lack of talent. Just because your line is 6'6 and over 300 lb does'nt mean your going to shove the ball the throats of a quailty opponent like Ohio st., Penn st. ect. there lack of disciplin on both sides of the ball is now apparent. Alot of these guy's need to know why they came to wis. in the first place. get a education and good football and win bigten titles and quit worring about parting and hooking up girls all the time. Leave that for the off season!

Jamie says:
WOW!! Looks like the sentiment is universal, save a couple!!
CAn't disagree w/ any of the criticisms re/ "BB"!
When my wife can sit watching the game and tell that the off. scheme is "run PJ Hill, run PJ Hill, RUN PJ HILL", makes it pretty predictable. That's why they got beat.
Mich. had NOTHING on the field, and two unpredictable plays, and it's 14 pts.
MY GRANDSON COULD COACH THAT WELL.

Rico D. Great says:
Donovan McNabb loved Childress in Philly. He's the head coach of the Vikings, how much more difficult could the Badger head coaching job be. When Childress was here, we had a balanced offense and they made few mistakes... Hire Childress

Darrell Espen Ree says:
Everybody is a coach. Give them a chance. Did anybody see Wisconsin getting any of the top athletes in the past? Schools like Wisconsin and Iowa always have to work with athletes and seldom get the blue chippers but always compete. I give the Badgers a good chance and am pleased with our football team. They only lost by a total of 6 points. Give them a break.

childress??? what are you smoking? his calling of plays was as bad as now. maybe bring cosgrove back too-he did a great job at nebraska. get real!!!

hcliff1 says:
I have had badger tickets since Alvarez came to town. The last couple of years I only go to a handful of games. Last week, there was no band, got to listen to hard rock music piped in. There was no electricity in the air. We play small schools that will never get us ranked for a bcs game, and we have Cal Poly on our schedule! Bilema was given Alvarez's team and had success by default. This year and the subsequent years will show what this move will do. Who the hell anointed him? If Alvarez and Bilema would stop worrying about there endorsements and cruise packages, maybe Wisconsin football could take the next step. As for now I look forward to a lost season with no bowl oppurtunities. Maybe we should sign up for the coaches cruise to get out of town!!

Conn. Badger says:
I agree the coaching is lacking. Poor play calling. Poor preperation. Poor player selection. I don't know how Everidge won the starting job. He sucks. You sneeze on him and he fumbles. He locks onto one receiver before the ball is snapped and tries to throw it into triple coverage every time. I don't know who the back up is, but get him in there instead of wasting time with this 5th year senior who seems to be just now learning the college game. The season is lost - no Big Ten Title no New Year's Day Bowl. We might as well get a sophmore QB in there now and start grooming him for next year.
(10/6/2008 12:11 PM)
Bob says:
Over paid assistants, head coaches best job may be hog farming, lets help him get there--fire his a--.

The defense is poorly coached almost as bad as the pack, the all mighty offensive coordinator/quarterback coach is worthless, his dad would be embarassed with his play calling-and our new defesnive coordinator , the only thing new is the smell

Barry will stick with them all, won't change till stadium is half fall

Bring on the U-Hauls

Rico D. Great says:
I agree, Alvarez gave Bielma the keys to the porsche with a full tank of gas, but he can't drive stick and he's spinning the tires. Get him out of there. Get him out of there. I think we should go after an up and coming coach before we have to settle for some coach that no one wants like Bielma. I'm tired to watching the Badgers get pounded on. It seems that most people are just happy to win a few games and have now desire to compete for a championship. We are always ranked high and then we get pounded by the same teams. I'm so glad we scheduled Marshall and Fresno... Maybe we can get the cheerleaders to run the ball and block

It'd be nice to see at least a hint of emotion on the sideline. I can remember Barry stalking the sidelines, raging mad and pushing his staff, the players, hell even the water boy to do SOMETHING to make a play. Haven't seen that from BB. He inherited a stocked cupboard and hasn't done anything to either refill it or to make something out of it.

Mike says:
Bielma is totally over his head..coaching staff a disaster...recruiting is non-existant...program is in real trouble. Time for a change before we go back to the old days before the Alvarez era!!!
(10/6/2008 11:05 AM)
Rico D. Great says:
I've said it a 1000 times. The key to the Badgers taking the next step to being a National Power is hiring Brad Childress. We haven't won a championship since he left the staff and went to the Eagles. He's on the hotseat in Minn right now. If they let him go the Badgers should jump all over him. One thing I can tell you about the other 3 Big Ten teams that pound us. Michigan, OSU, and Penn State all have stable, proven coaching staffs. And they all schedule and recruit on a level to bring in the best players. We will never beat them because they have better coaching, better players, better facilities, and better tradition. Until we are willing to take that step. Hello San Antonio and Tampa

And ... what about BB himself? Does he know how to get them ready to play 4 quarter games? What do the last two weeks show?

It's time to take a good look at BB's coaching staff.
