Dane County Rape Crisis Center hosts coffee for a cause

For the State Journal
If you are like most folks, you need a strong cup of coffee and a hearty breakfast after a Saturday night spent watching the Badgers. Well, instead of throwing a few spoonfuls of Folgers in some warm water, how about trying Ethiopian Yirsacheffe Natural Process Adado from Johnson Brothers Coffee Roasters? And instead of burning a couple Eggo waffles in your toaster, how about a buttery pastry from La Brioche?

The Dane County Rape Crisis Center is hosting the 13th annual Java Jive today (Sunday, Oct. 5) at the Brink Lounge from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thanks to sponsors like Group Health Cooperative, there will be almost two dozen varieties of coffees (all from local coffee vendors) paired with foods from almost two dozen local restaurants and bakeries. The morning includes a silent auction and the smooth vocal stylings of Madison's first lady of jazz, Jan Wheaton.

All proceeds will benefit the Rape Crisis Center and their mission towards serving victims of sexual assault with 24-hour crisis support (including legal and medical assistance) and educating the community with presentations and self-defense lessons. And in spite of the current economy, RCC Executive Director Kelly Anderson is optimistic that today's program will exceed past successful efforts.

"This is our major, signature fundraising event of the year — "Madison's Most Relaxed Fundraiser" — and it's critical to our ability to keep providing free services, 24/7," said Anderson. "We are hoping to match or even exceed the nearly $20,000 we netted in each of the past two years . . . that's a lot of money for us!"

Aside from the cups o' joe, ranging from Atomic Brew from Cargo and Ground Zero Coffee to Tanzanian Peaberry from Etes-Vous Prets?! Coffee Co., the silent auction features an attractive variety of prizes. According to Anderson, the day is overall relaxing due to the smell of java and sounds of Ms. Wheaton's voice wafting through the air, but the silent auction "adds a little competitive fun, and attendance has grown significantly."

Prizes include a week-long stay at a beach house in Florida, to tickets on the 50-yard line for the Green Bay Packers-Detroit Lions football game, to tickets to a Badger men's hockey game that includes parking.

And if Florida or Green Bay in late December is not your style, there will be plenty of chances to win gift certificates for local resturants, spas and jewelry stores. If that's not enough, a locally crafted coffee table will be raffled off — one that could go with all of the new coffee you will buy after experiencing it for the first time.
